With the help of event coordinator Melody Gawliu, a Daly City native, they put together a FREE Glow-In-The-Dark bowling event at Classic Bowling Center in Daly City, CA. As if free bowling wasn’t enough, they also provided other free activities such as a card making station, a “Why I Love My Mom” poster, GIVEAWAYS! and a photo memento station for attendees to remember the great time they had at the First Annual Mother’s Day and Family Free Bowl.

Although the economy is affecting many businesses, families and non-profits, the Daly City Youth Health Center is one non-profit that is hunkering down to survive this storm. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Health Center continues to provide programs and services that this community needs.

As a member of the Daly City Council, I see importance in looking toward the future and investing in our city’s young people. Daly City has the fifth largest number of foreign-born residents in the United States. Fifty-two percent of the population is foreign born and 64 percent speak a language other than English at home. While our diversity is one of the strengths of Daly City, it also poses unique challenges for our youth.

The Health Center is cognizant of these challenges. Of the 4,500 youth served last year, 38% were Asian or Pacific Islander and 31% were Hispanic or Latino.

Many of these youth come from recent immigrant families. In counseling sessions, when cultural and generational clashes appear between youth and adults in a family, the therapists facilitate better communication between the two groups by encouraging each side to see from the other’s perspective. In the primary care clinic, the parents’ wishes sometimes clash not only with those of the youth, but also with the dictates of California law. Here, the Health Center providers play a critical role: they educate youth about their rights in California, while encouraging the youth to communicate with their parents.

The Daly City Youth Health Center is one of the local organizations responsible for the record low birth rate in California’s teens.

As the California Department of Public Health recently reported, there has been a decline from a rate of 37.1 births for every 1,000 females ages 15-19 in 2007 to 35.2 in 2008. Though the birth rates to Hispanic teens have also declined, they still have the highest rate of 56.9.

I am both a proud member of the Health Center’s Advisory Council and a grateful supporter of the programs and services they provide to our community. Unfortunately, due to a loss of nearly a third of its budget, the Daly City Youth Health Center will be forced to significantly scale back services and lay off staff, beginning July 2010. During this hardship, there is a bright spot. The Health Center is celebrating its 20th Anniversary on April 29, 6 to 9 p.m., Harding Park Golf Course. Community members are encouraged to show their support for the Health Center and attend the event. For more information about joining the celebration, donating, or learning more about our programs at DCYHC, call Tracey Heather at 985-7014.
